Notes from November 1, 2016
Amineh Safi: Muslims in America
Amineh came to America at the age of ten in 2002. Post 9/11 was a difficult time to be Muslim in America.  She experienced prejudice and was later inspired in an American Government class at Eden Prairie High School to find her voice.

Amineh has researched the portrayal of Muslims and Islam in the media and their association with terrorism. She found that in the media Muslims receive a disproportionate amount of the label “terrorism” applied to crimes committed by Muslims as oppose to similar crimes committed by other groups. She noted that 6% of terrorism in the United States is committed by Muslims. Other groups may be referred to as “militia” rather than terrorist and this perpetuates the image of the Muslim terrorist.  She spoke about the relationship with foreign policy, the state of American Muslims, and the situation in Syria. She also discussed her personal experience with the Syrian revolution and tragedy experienced by her family.

Amineh hopes to enable Muslim and non-Muslim relations to flourish. Another goal is to convey the Muslim voice in politics and increase Muslim community participation. Ultimately, Amineh aspires to promote change in community development policies to ensure they convey, respect, and preserve everyone’s rights
