MATT BRATON, ERIC FIENLESS AND SAM RULOND: UPDATE FROM OUR LOCAL BOY SCOUTS
Scout leaders and Eagle Scout Sam with Troop 479 shared with us the difference Scouts are making in our community. 2016 was a big year! There are seven Eagle Scouts in the troop, a record for a calendar year, as well as a new Scout Master and Chairperson. Community service this past year included cleaning the grounds at the Fort Snelling Cemetery, senior citizen yard cleanup, and bell ringing for the Salvation Army. Eagle Scout projects include laying pavers at the St. Francis Shrine, a bee habitat and its ongoing maintenance, an outdoor classroom white board and activity tables, and a walking path at St. Andrew’s Church. Scouts have fun too!

They scuba, ski, shoot, ice fish, mountain bike, and hike—80 miles of backpacking/camping at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. They offer coed programs in scouts called Venturers, as well as camp programs to assist juveniles that have been involved in crimes to get a fresh start through community service, a program to assist Scouts with career exploration, and the Polaris program was created to provide lifelong learning opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. Northern Star Council has 709 chartered organizations, 1074 scouting units, 13623 volunteers, serves nearly 35000 boys and girls ages 5-20 with a budget of approximately $13 million. In 2016 they logged nearly 200000 community service hours.
