Eden Prairie Interfaith Circle

Our country and our local community are ever more diverse culturally and religiously. The challenge of the age is to welcome the lively engagement and mutual enrichment that our differences can bring. Representatives of  the Interfaith Circle -- the sponsors of Eden Prairie's award-winning Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration -- will join us to share about their work, which centers on learning, celebrating and serving together as people of faith. The Interfaith Circle is made up of people of all the great faith traditions and their various expressions as well as secular humanists.

Notes from July 26, 2016
Alexs Pate - Innocent Classroom
Jared introduced Alexs Pate. We have heard many speakers but were especially impacted by Alexs presentation on the achievement gap. Alexs is the founder and CEO of the Innocent Classroom.

Author and educator Alexs Pate launched Innocent Classroom in 2012 with a vision to rebuild teacher-student relationships in school districts with some of the country’s widest gaps in achievement. Since that time, more than 2300 educators in 170 schools and programs have participated in constructing the Innocent Classroom workshops.

Alexs presentation was inspiring and thought provoking. The messages that we receive about who we are can dictate our path. Children enter the classroom with preconceived ideas of who they are and how they will be treated. Teachers have preconceived ideas of who the children are and what their capabilities are. Alexs reveals those beliefs and helps to reset the expectations and challenge educators to sift those preconceptions and rewrite the script for those children.

Alexs Pate has also published five novels to date. His best-known work is the New York Times Bestseller Amistad, which was commissioned by Steven Spielberg’s Dreamworks/SKG and was based on David Franzoni's screenplay. His other novels include Finding Makeba, The Multicultiboho Sideshow and West of Rehoboth, which was the “Honor Fiction Book” for 2002. Alexs’s first nonfiction book, In The Heart of the Beat: The Poetry of Rap was published in 2010.
