Notes from October 4, 2016

Hennepin County Commissioner Candidates Debbie Goetel and Maureen Scallen-Failor

The program was moderated by Rotary member Irene Kelly. Each candidate provided introductions and background information. See their web sites (https://debbiegoettel.com/ and http://maureenforhennepincounty.com/ ) for information regarding the candidates.

Both candidates support the Counties Transit Improvement Board (CTIB) and recognize the need for a collaborative effort. Regarding transportation funding, Ms. Goetel suggested that additional funding will be needed but was not sure what the source would be but it needs to be long term and sustainable. Ms. Scallen-Failor suggested that we need to find a non-tax source of funding and that the state should have used state surplus to assist in funding.

Regarding Health and Human Services, Ms. Scallen-Failor suggested that the County needs to look for monies by improving efficiencies and pushing back on unfunded mandates. Ms. Goetel suggests that the County needs to look for funding assistance in meeting mandates.  Both candidates have positions supporting increasing non-retail jobs in Hennepin County and work force training programs and protecting children.

In summary, Ms. Scallen-Failor cited her 30 years of business experience and that she is committed to working to provide collaborative, thoughtful leadership. Ms. Goetel cited her 10 years as Mayor and abilities in long term planning and transparency and her priorities are to infrastructure, transit and employees.
