Notes from March 1, 2016
Jeff Hafner: "Ash Tree Preservation" - The Emerald Ash Borer: A Predictable Natural Disaster and Coordinated Solution
Arborist Jeff Hafner was happy to be at our meeting but did not have any cash for a fine! He was at our club to
speak about the susceptibility of ash trees to fatal attacks by the invasive emerald ash borer (EAB) and a
coordinated solution to the problem. Minnesota has a billion ash trees and they need to be preserved.

He took examples to demonstrate how the ash tree population could vanish from EAB attacks. The EAB ‘death
curve’ has seen a rapid increase but this is a predictable natural disaster unlike tornadoes, which are unpredictable natural disasters. Fortunately, with the benefit of 10 years of scientific research, there is a way to slow ash mortality (SLAM). SLAM in an urban forest involves reducing the rate at which EAB grows and slowing down the ash mortality. There are also multiple tools to do this.

As part of the Minnesota Ash tree preservation program, a 20-year cost-benefit analysis was done for the 7-county Twin Cities metro area. To remove ash trees as they succumb to EAB and replace a small percentage would involve huge costs, up to $600 million dollars. The study also showed that preservation of Ash trees saves money compared to the ‘remove and replace’ option.

The development of a coordinated integrated pest management approach has given the cities of Minnesota a unique opportunity to manage the EAB infestation in a way that minimizes public costs and maximizes the benefits from our public investments in green infrastructure. This is a solution based on science and provides great returns on dollars spent. It was caucus day and he reminded the members that we all had a role to play in this and should speak to our representatives about preserving our environment. Ash tree preservation is part of this bigger picture!
