Demonstrating how stolen information can be obtained – down to ZIP Code level, with about 1,800 credit cards from 55344 appearing to be stolen – Mark urged us to use credit cards rather than debit cards. There’s a big difference between credit cards and debit cards if your information is hacked. If your credit card is hacked, the issuer (the bank) is the one that will be fighting to get its money back. If your debit card is hacked, YOU will be fighting to get your money back.
That said, new and even more frightening forms of fraud are being discovered, including a malware called Zeus that can penetrate systems formerly thought of as quite safe. Mark related this by reciting a recent case involving a $1 million, high-tech, attempted bank heist involving an Edina nonprofit organization. The key ingredient to this incident will sound familiar: an employee clicked on a fraudulent-but-inviting email that gave Zeus access to the nonprofit’s data.
Mark tends to give high marks to Apple, its computers, and its Apple Pay system for being safer when it comes to financial information. You can find out much more about Mark and his company at www.compforensics.com.

Happy Fines
Rotarians from both clubs were happy and willing to pay for sharing why. Here’s a sampling: Bev Aho was happy to report that the EP Community Foundation’s Prairie Brewfest is set for Saturday, Sept. 10. Caryl was happy to have a great encounter with a former Rotary Youth Exchange student. Former club president and visitor Bud Baker was happy, well just happy to be at the meeting. Ditto for Angela Wandera.
