Timothy Davis: "Charitable Giving – Everyone Benefits"
Tim Davis is a partner with Hellmuth & Johnson Law Firm and chairs their estate planning practice group. He spoke to the club about successful strategies for charitable giving. Davis, who helps clients create their charitable legacy, listed various aspects of charitable donations and gave some insights on charitable donors.
The club learned that Americans are generous givers. They give over $15 billion every year to international causes. Donors give for various reasons and have different priorities while choosing a cause. Wealthier donors monitor their giving and use professional advisors. Some stop giving when there are too many solicitations or for other reasons that Tim listed.

Tim listed common strategies for charitable giving and spoke about different kinds of gifts. He had a hand-out with an exhaustive list of various options for charitable donations. This included a recent technique of IRA Beneficiary Designation.
Tim also discussed Donor Advised Funds, an option available for donors to Eden Prairie Community Foundation (EPCF). Pastor Rod Anderson, Development Committee Chairperson for EPCF, appreciated Tim’s affirmation of Donor Advised Funds as an excellent vehicle for charitable giving while living, and by family after death. For the last several years EPCF has provided Donor Advised Fund opportunities and at this time all who have set up such funds are EP AM Rotarians! Members can get more info from Mark Weber.

SPOTLIGHT ON Elaine Larabee
Elaine Larabee spoke to us about growing up on a farm in Neenah, WI and how that had an impact on her life. She decided that she would not marry a farmer since it was hard work and all of it had to be finished ‘since the sun doesn’t always shine.’ She shared some nostalgic moments though, describing how she learned how to share.
Elaine’s father always had flowers for everyone in town and it was common to share your produce with neighbors. She remembered how her family lost a whole crop while she was in college. Things she learned while growing up: to be direct, to be careful with money, and never to stop learning. She also talked about her new job and being chosen as school board chair.
