David La Vaque

Author of Tourney Time

May be an image of 1 person, beard and outdoorsDuring our meeting this past Tuesday we were lucky enough to be able to hear from longtime sports journalists David La Vaque and his partner Loren Nelson. David and Loren are the authors of Tourney Time, a book that focuses on the 75 years of the Minnesota High School Hockey Tournaments. They are both writers for the Star Tribune. David shared the story about how he was interested in writing a book about high school hockey, so he asked his friend Loren if he would be interested in writing it with him and he was all on board. The process of the book writing was very eventful and came with many, many interviews. There are 75 chapters, one for each year, and there is around 1,000 - 3,000 words per chapter. In the book there are never seen before photos from hockey tournaments with never heard before crazy stories from people who were on the team during that time. They talked about the key games, the backstories, and the players that made each one shine. Their book brings firsthand perspectives and insights on the games and tournaments, while in-depth statistics and results that reveal the numbers behind the memories. The Rotarians were full of questions as high school hockey is a big deal in Minnesota... especially Eden Prairie!
