Dr. John Wright, 1926-2016

Eden Prairie A.M. Rotary Founding President

It is with deep sadness and great respect that we make all Eden Prairie Rotarians aware of the passing of Dr. John Wright, DVM,the Charter President of the Eden Prairie A.M. Rotary Club. John, age 90, provided the strong leadership needed to begin the first Rotary Club in Eden Prairie in 1976 which was the first breakfast Rotary Club in the Minneapolis-St.Paul area.  Through this leadership, John established the strong   tradition and reputation of Rotarians in the burgeoning community of Eden Prairie as leaders and contributors.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, October 8th at 12 noon at the Cremation Society, 7110 France Avenue South in Edina with visitation one hour preceding the Services.  Memorials are suggested to the Eden Prairie Crime Fund or the Eden Prairie AM Rotary Club, P.O Box 44603, Eden Prairie, MN 55344.

A native of Indiana, John did his studies at Indiana University and Michigan State University where he received his doctorate.  He served as a 1st Lieutenant during the Korean War stationed at Ft. Snelling.  Following his Army Service, he established the Wright Animal Hospital, later named the Eden Prairie Animal Clinic which was located at Flying Cloud Drive and Shady Oak Road. He practiced until 1991 when he sold the practice.  He and his wife ,Charlene, raised their family of three children in the Eden Prairie Area.  One of his daughters, Lucy Mattson, is a Rotarian following the example of her father.
John, who was a Paul Harris Fellow, served not only Rotary in many capacities but served the Eden Prairie and Hopkins Communities as well including the Eden Prairie School Board where he was its Treasurer.  He was very active in establishing the Eden Prairie Police Department's K-9 Unit and provided his professional services to the unit until his retirement. He was also a Shriner, and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Notes from Sept. 13, 2016
Terri Bonoff – Community Education Volunteer Program

Terri Bonoff is running for US House of Representatives in MN District 3. She is a Rotarian in Minnetonka and is a third generation Third District resident. She began her professional career in the family clothing business after college. When that business closed she joined Tonka Toys until they moved out of the Twin Cities and then joined Navarre Corporation. After 20 years she left the corporate world to be at home with four teenagers and to get involved in local issues. She has served in the Minnesota Senate since 2005.

During her MN Senate career she has work on education issues including early childhood scholarships and the Pipeline Project (MNPIPELINE.COM) which matches students and employers while still in school.

She decided to get into the House race “when she saw the partisan rancor and the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency.” She calls herself a fiscal conservative and is proud of supporting transportation funding. She considers safety (both domestic and international) and immigration reform to be the most important issues.

During Q & A she commented that – She would like to end negative third person campaign commercials. Government’s role should be about protection and should not overreach into business issues.  Government should be negotiating drug prices. Advocates zero based budgeting to reduce record deficits.

Spotlight on Andy Currie
Andy Currie was born in Pittsburg, PA and grew up in western Pennsylvania. “He knew early on he did not want to work in the coal mines or be a dentist.” After receiving his undergraduate degree he earned his Masters at Purdue and PhD from Ohio State. He began his career as a fundraiser for higher education. He spent four years at Akron Art Museum and moved to New York City joining a large fundraising and consulting firm. He moved to Minnesota to open the Minnesota office for the same company. He formed his own consulting company and worked on some very high profile fundraising projects. He built the Company up to 150 clients in the Twin Cities area.
