Speaker: Dr. Abul Sharah - Update on International Village Clinic
Dr. Abul Sharah, of Bloomington, gave us an update on his International Village Clinic project in Uttar Pradesh, India’s poorest province. This is a project that Rotary International and individual clubs including Eden Prairie A.M. have supported financially over the years. A non-profit dedicated to bringing curative and preventative health services to villages in northern India, IVC was started more than 15 years ago by Abul, who grew up poor in that area but became educated and spent 27 years in senior engineering and marketing positions in the U.S., for companies such as Honeywell and Eden Prairie’s MTS Systems. He is now retired and devoting his life to the clinic and its work. The real focus of IVC is preventative medicine – prenatal care, nutrition, vaccination, health education, and family planning. Today it has a staff of 60 – including four doctors – on an annual budget of only about $150,000, serving around 200,000 people.
You can find out more about Abul’s work and IVC at www.villageclinic.org.

Spotlight on John Brown
John Brown noted in his vocational that he grew up in southwest Minneapolis, attended Edina Morningside High School, got his business degree at Mankato State, and went to grad school in upstate New York before starting his career in sales. He eventually returned to Minnesota in building-materials sales, meeting Vicki while in a ski club and marrying her in 1990. They bought a boat and spent many weekends on the river near Hastings. John retired in 2012, at first struggling with how to spend his time (besides golf) before taking on bus-driving duties –or “behavior analyst/transportation specialist” with the Eden Prairie Schools. Rotary has also become one of those activities filling his leisure time.
