Guest speaker Emily Duke of CyberSmart Law provided some insight on who’s hacking business, government, and individual computers – and why. Knowing who is behind the hacks and what motivates them can take some of the fear away, she said, and better prepare us for foiling their attempts.
Hackers typically fall into categories such as teens, organized crime, nation/states, and groups like Anonymous. But sometimes the hackers are disgruntled employees or business competitors. These various groups are typically out for money, ego, ideology, nationalism, or revenge. Occasionally the hacker has been blackmailed or compromised in some other way.
As with any crime, the perpetrators are looking for opportunity, so practicing “good cyber hygiene” is critical, says Duke. Employee training is essential, including such things as being suspicious of electronic links, invoices, or e-mails that can lead to malware, credit-card fraud, or wire-transfer fraud. Also, make sure your business vendors are actively protecting their technology equipment – and thus you – from hackers.
