Author of "Africa's Child"

Maria Nambhu is the author of Africa’s Child, a poignant new memoir exploring the power of the human spirit. Overcoming odds, Maria Nambhu, then "Mary," grew up in an African orphanage for mixed-race children. She determined the best way to love and take care of herself was to get a formal education. Dance, she discovered, brought her joy as she wrestled with her identity and sought hope for her future.

Speakers Jenni Ebert, Julie Menk and Amara Robinson - Community Education

Jenni as coordinator of Community Education introduced Julie (Community Engagement Specialist) and Amara (Americorp VISTA). The 2015-2016 volunteer program included-

5800 plus hours from September 2015 – July 2016
Weekly volunteers
Volunteers over the summer (4 days per week for 4-5 weeks)
94 volunteers serving special events
3 schools supported
4 roles offered during school year.
- Book Buddies Elementary Tutors at Oak Point
- Preschool Reading Tutor at Lower Campus Preschool
- ECFE Classroom Support and Education
- Early childhood Screening Volunteer –volunteers interact with children while parents meet with screeners

Volunteers can apply on line for $21 which covers the cost of a background check and the staff interviews candidates. Upon hiring, candidates undergo orientation and training. Check out their web site at http://www.edenpr.org/volunteer for more information.

Prop School Supply Drive ends this week and envelope was passed for contributions.

District 5950 scholarship applications due 9/30
EP Foundation Brewfest 9/10 from 3-6 p.m. at Purgatory Creek Park
Olanchito grant (approx. $90,000) to build bathrooms finally approved by RI.
No meeting 9/6 due to joint meeting with EP Noon Club on 9/8.

Spotlight on Lauri Pryor

Laurie Pryor is a new member recruited by Yvonne Selcer. Laurie attended Carlton College in Northfield where she met her husband. They have 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Laurie is running for Minnesota House and spent five years as a management analyst for the State of Minnesota. Laurie has a Masters in Communications and taught public speaking at Hamline University. She was a volunteer in Hopkins school district including Destination Imagination and Odyssey of the Mind. She also assisted the debate team as a coach and mentor.
