Guest speaker Mike Franklin of Clean Energy Economy Minnesota provided an overview of how a movement to “clean” energy is sparking a transformation in Minnesota – including new jobs.
The former lobbyist, attorney, Jordan City Council member, and “occasional Rotarian” spoke chiefly on how renewable energy – chiefly wind and solar – is on the grow as the result of policy changes, sensible business decisions, more public support, pressure for job creation, and of course the moral obligation brought on by climate change.
A good example is Xcel Energy’s own long-range plan. The two largest pieces of the utility’s energy resources are currently coal at 37 percent and nuclear at 30 percent. In 2030, however, coal will have dropped to 15 percent as a share, while wind moves up to the No. 2 spot at 25 percent, just behind nuclear. Solar energy, barely on the radar now, will have an 8 percent share, according to the utility.
Mike Franklin says job creation has come with this movement toward renewable energy. He maintains that clean energy has created 15,388 Minnesota jobs in the last 14 years, and the number of Minnesota businesses involved in the clean-energy sector now number nearly 800.

Spotlight onOrv Sietsema
Sietsema was born and raised in Iowa, a Hawkeyes fan. After high school and college he attended mortuary school in Dallas, and he then spent 44 years in the mortuary business – the last 22 with Washburn-McReavy. Now retired, he’s been married 56 years to his wife, and they have two children and two grandchildren – a 25-year-old grand-daughter and a 23-year-old grandson.
Happy Fines
We’re happy. And we’re willing to pay fines for being so.
Dave Anderson is happy about last Saturday’s “Mystery Trip” – a tour of St. Paul’s gangster roots. And also about how accommodating Biaggi’s Gary Chanen was in helping provide dinner afterward.
Mary Jo Sherwood, filling in for husband Frank, is happy about a new grandchild, a boy, born Sunday.
Dan O’Brien is happy that new grand-daughter Sloan is recovered from illness and is doing fine at home.
Jon Melander is happy about having celebrated a birthday a day earlier, but sad that he can’t attend Vino Classico because of pending neck surgery.
