Notes from February 9, 2016
Planning for Social Security
Guest speaker Molly Sebold, a senior wealth advisor at Boulay, offered the ins and outs of maximizing retirement income and especially Social Security during her Feb. 9 presentation, which focused in particular on baby boomers.
Molly believes that Social Security will always be with us, in some form. It’s not in danger of running out of money for baby boomers anytime soon, but changes in the system are needed. “I think for boomers … benefits are not likely to be affected much,” she said. And, what a system it is, with something on the order of 3,000 rules.
Social Security is important to think about because 73 million boomers are moving into retirement, and studies show that less than one-half of them have adequate money for those retirement years. This problem is made worse by the fact that life spans are extending to near 90 years old.
Molly said it’s important to become acquainted with the rules of Social Security use, and to tap those monies in careful coordination with other investments. You can find a wealth of both general and specific advice and information at www.socialsecurity.gov.

Announcements
  • Save the date: Our next Vino Classico wine- and beer-tasting fundraiser is Oct. 1.
  • CD’s including movies and music are needed for the Edendale Residence media center recently funded in part with an A.M. Rotary grant. Bring them to the next two meetings.
  • A committee continues to look at new, permanent meeting places for the club. Talk to Jared Chester if you have information that will help this group find our new home.
  • We’ll meet at Boulay offices courtesy of Matt Crane for our Feb. 16 meeting because Bent Creek Golf Club is unavailable on that date.
  • On Feb. 23 we’ll be at Feed My Starving Children in Chanhassen for a short meeting, light breakfast, and meal-packing activity. If you haven’t already signed up and wish to participate, contact Mo Mara.
Happy Fines
We’re happy. And we’re willing to pay fines for being so:
  • Caryl Hansen, Dan O’Brien and Dick Ward are in wonderment of Meals on Wheels drivers and coordinators from Rotary being able to navigate in snowstorms and other hazards.
  • Carol Bomben is happy about an impending trip to Houston to celebrate a grandson’s second birthday.
  • George Esbensen is happy about being one day closer to the end of the 2016 election season.
  • Irene Kelly was pleased to see the Rotary logo in the background of one presidential candidate’s appearance on TV.
  • Josh Swanson is happy about being able to see some classroom project work firsthand.
  • Roger Jorgensen is happy to have heard a U.S. senator label Rotary as the backbone of America.
  • Speaker Molly Sebold is, well, happy to be here.

EPHS Wrestling Captain J.J. Veytia  noted that the wrestling team is having a great year, with a current record of 27-3. It’s looking ahead to tournaments that could culminate in a strong showing at state.
Eagles Against Hunger Organizers Tia Lang, Cassie Gross, and Caroline Frischmon presented about the upcoming EPHS Eagles Against Hunger project: .Tia encouraged Rotarians to consider sponsoring the community-wide meal-packing project that will be held April 14 at EPHS under the guidance of the Impact Lives nonprofit. Some 285,000 meals will be assembled for shipment overseas to help those in need. But the project costs about $75,000, so local sponsors are needed. Sponsorships are tax-deductible and checks can be written to Impact Lives, 6985 Oxford Street, St. Louis Park, MN 55426.
