Notes from October 5th
Nevada Littlewolf:
Executive Director of Our Children MN

May be an image of 1 person and standingOur speaker Nevada Littlewolf, joined us this past Tuesday to speak with us about the Page Amendment and our Department of Public Education in the state of Minnesota. Nevada grew up on the iron range and is a part of the Leech Lake Nation. Nevada spoke on the topics of the state's education system being in a decline and about the Allen Page Amendment. The amendment is to make changes in the wording of Minnesota's State Constitution to provide every student with the right to quality education. She spoke on how this amendment would help all kids gain education as a civil right in the state of Minnesota. Also, the amendment will focus on the children and their families to gain more positioning in the state's government. A few other points noted in Nevada's speech on Tuesday were how the consequences of the education gaps in Minnesota are too high and how we as community members need to be more vocal when it comes to the educational systems. The education gaps start in childhood and lead to economic gaps for adults. To fight the generational poverty in the state we need to close these gaps early in the schooling of our youth. All in all, Nevada brought many points to the table about the new schooling amendment and our educational systems' declines and failures.
