Karen White of Paisley Park Museum

Paisley Park: An International Tourist Destination In Our Own Neighborhood

Home to the artist, Prince, for the past sixteen years, Paisley Park has been transformed into a tribute museum for fans from around the world since his death. Prince once said, “I like to say I live in the world, but I’m not of it".  In every way, Paisley Park was the fulfillment of his creative desire to live and work in a space free from limitation.  Here he created a unique universe unto itself – one that allowed him to nurture and fully express his otherworldly gifts as a musician and performing artist. Now open to the public, Karen White will provide an overview of the new museum and its impact on the community.

GEORGE DOW: WILL A "PORTFOLIO LIFE" BECOME YOUR SECOND HALF STORY?
George Dow spoke about how we can reshape our personal, professional and community lives in our second half. George made frequent reference to the book, Portfolio Life, by David Corbett. There are five elements to Corbett’s model:

    1. Working in the form you want
    2. Learning and self-development
    3. Giving back
    4. Healthy living
    5. Enjoying personal pursuits and leisure

There are a couple of strategies to leading a Portfolio Life. One is “Test and Learn.” Here you craft experiments or small endeavors to experience what you might desire. You may shift connections as you seek out people that are doing what you want to be doing. You are determining what makes sense for you. Another is “Planned Happenstance.” The premise here is summarized by John Krumbolz, “A satisfying life and career is found through actively creating your own luck and making the most of new and unforeseen experiences.”

George asked that one think about what you would want three key people in your life to say about you at age 75. Considering the five elements everyone needs to find their personal right percent to spend in
each area. This will be different for everyone. He noted that often the first half of a career is about obtaining success while the second half is about significance and leaving a legacy. Regarding retirement,
people need something more than the aimlessness that many find.
