David Hutchinson, Hennepin County Sheriff

Issues Facing the Sheriff's Office

Sheriff David Hutchinson spoke to the EP AM Rotary Club about the issues facing the sheriff’s office and also new initiatives that are being implemented. First, Sheriff Hutchinson spoke about the support that is being given to those that serve our community, such as financial, emotional, and mental support. He also mentioned that the Hennepin County Sheriff’s office is nationally and internationally accredited, and we are one of the only county’s of this population to be able to fingerprint property crimes. We also have one of the biggest water patrols in the nation since we are able to patrol 104 lakes and 3 rivers.

Additionally, Sheriff Hutchinson spoke about COVID-19 and the unrest in our country due to George Floyd’s death. The sheriff’s office did their best with that and learned from their mistakes, and currently they are preparing for March 8th’s trial of former Officer Chauvin. Sheriff David Hutchinson is confident that what happened in May will not happen again thanks to the national guard as well as police and sheriff’s offices across the country. Again, Sheriff Hutchinson stands with peaceful protesting, but as soon as it turns violent, it is not going to be tolerated.

Furthermore, Sheriff David Hutchinson discussed education and training programs to help individuals in jail gain skills, so that they don’t come back to jail. Unfortunately, there is a small percentage of individuals who do come back, so they are trying to help those individuals with mental health. To do this, they have instituted a mental health plan and in a month, they are hiring a chief from the county to lead a social work program throughout other suburbs, so individuals who are mentally ill or those that suffer from addiction can go to treatment facilities to get the help they need.

Sheriff David Hutchinson believes that Hennepin County’s Sheriff’s Office is the best in the state due to our ability to adapt to and overcome anything. The only thing Sheriff David Hutchinson has to worry about in his position is keeping people safe and happy regardless of their zip code, nationality, income level, sexual orientation etc. The sheriff’s office is really trying to do things to make Hennepin County better and to give the best possible service.

Spotlight on Robb Hiller

Robb Hiller grew up in Marshall, Minnesota, but he spent the first part of his childhood in Minnetonka. From there, he found his love for writing, communication, and giving back to the community. As a junior in high school, he was chosen to write an article for the newspaper where he further developed his love for writing. From there, he went on to St. Olaf college. There, he mentored a child with whom he spent over four years mentoring. After St. Olaf, he worked at many large companies. Later, he had the opportunity to be the CEO of a tremendous company, which was a lot of fun, but a lot of work. After 8 years, he decided to sell the company. Currently, he works in performance solutions. Three years ago, Robb found out that he had three deadly cancers. After five months of chemotherapy, his three cancers were completely gone. His new book The Power of 3 has been released, which talks through overcoming adversity.
