Notes from March 29, 2016
Speaker: Amalia Damgaard - Mosaic of Flowers
Irene Kelly introduced her friend Amalia Damgaard.  Amalia was born in Guatemala City and is married with a
seventeen year old son.  She had a successful career in international banking and earned an Executive Masters in International Business from St Louis University.  Later she refocused her career and graduated from and later served on the Board of Directors of Le Cordon Bleu.  Her role model was her grandmother who taught her
simple and healthy artisan cooking using local organic ingredients.  Amalia will also be speaking at the District
Conference.   Her mission is to develop a better understanding of Guatemalan culture through healthy gourmet
cuisine.
Amalia believes that cultural understanding leads to familiarity and results in doing business.  The latin
population is growing and becoming more attractive to businesses.  Amalia stated that Latinos prefer to be addressed by country of origin versus generic labels such as Hispanic.  They are personable and form friendships easily and prefer face to face versus e-mail.  Therefor marketing to the Latino culture requires that you establish a connection and become culturally relevant.  She cited the brand Goya as an example.  Their slogan is, “If it is Goya, it has to be good.”  Another Company (La Costena) is over 100 years old and acquired Faribault Foods in 2014.
Her first book Amalia’s Guatemalan Connection has won nine international awards including the prestigious Gourmand World Cookbook Award for Best Foreign Cuisine Book USA.  Check out her web site at http://www.amaliallc.com/ for more information.
