December 8, 2015 Meeting and Reminders

The Elves Start Early! Arrive at 7:20 to meet Santa this Tuesday, and wear your ugly sweater!

What a treat we have lined up for us on Tuesday! The Eden Prairie choir will greet members, guests, kids and grandkids with song at 7:20, and Santa and his elves will be waiting for us. The kids will get to sit on Santa's lap, the elves will tell a story, and there may even be some treats involved! As always, Biaggi's will provide a feast, then the Eden Prairie choir will present a mini-concert that will get us all in the spirit.

And...It just wasn’t fair for the kids to have all the fun this Tuesday at our Holiday Family party.
New This Year: Ugly Sweater Contest!! Wear your best (or worst?) holiday sweater and win a coveted EP AM Rotary Prize and bragging rights for a whole year!!

Reminders

1. The Grant Committee will meet at 7:30am on Wednesday, December 9th at the Preserve Barn, 11221 Anderson Lakes Parkway. Please review the materials and come prepared with any questions that may pop up.

2. Swallowship Happy Hour is on Wednesday, December 9th at Biaggi's from 5-6:30pm. Irene Kelly will be your host.

3. The December Board meeting is 12/15.

4. There's a SafeWater Plus Service Trip planned for spring break (April 3-9th), and adults and students are welcome. See Mo or Jeanne for info; there's an informational meeting this Sunday evening.

Speaker: Jack Alexander - Gustavus Entrepreneur Group

First Rotary Meeting. Not a business professional, yet!

Co Founder of GSC General Benefit Corporation Origins - Jack's sophomore year a professor came up to him interested in starting a social entrepreneurship club. Thought about it over the summer. Jack felt he had a number of internships that didn't result in real business experience. The thought of having a true business experience appealed to him. One of his professor’s (Doc E) had been making a home salsa that was sold at the local farmer's markets and sold well. Originally the professor had thought about commercializing the salsa and starting a business but realized he could accomplish multiple purposes by having students involved. He began to consider what to do with the profits and at the time a Gustie group was in India helping to make wells for safe drinking water. They have partnered with Thriving Water, a non-profit providing safe water solutions similar to Safe Water Plus.

They decided to structure the business and decided on a growing trend called a "Benefit corporation". The product is made in River Falls, Wisconsin and packaged and shipped from the regional treatment center in St. Peter. Their future plans are to simplify the business and to consider other obstacles such as how to reinvest some of the profits back into the business. They began to distribute to local grocers and eventually landed several Lunds & Byerly's locations. There are some unique characteristics of a student run business. Little to no support during the summer to name one. On the other hand, one of the great advantages is support from alumni and business. Jack mentioned that they are now on Amazon.com and they are selling gift packs over the web at www.gsebcorp.com. When Jack was asked what lesson he has learned from helping to start, grow and run a business he said, “You have to find a way to embrace uncertainty." It was apparent to the Rotary AM group that Jack has been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug and will certainly be running his own business some day.

Carol Bomben had Thanksgiving on Thursday and Christmas on Friday with family and grandsons visiting.
Bev Aho – seconded Brad’s comments and mentioned that they moved parents here to Summit Place as well.
Craig Blixrud said he is happy to have a birthday because it beats the alternative
Jenifer Loon said she was playing Nurse Rached this week as her husband, Doug was recovering from rotator cuff surgery
Dan O’Brien reminded everyone that Santa accepts checks for the rotary foundation
Bob Davis is celebrating his daughter's birthday
Bruce Hutchins' grandson completed basic training in the Army
Kathy Huckedahl’s daughter is now the pastry chef at restaurant Eastside
