In an effort to inform the attendees of current developments in the digital underground as well as provide realistic advice for cyber protection, Mark Lanterman will be discussing recent high profile cyber-crime events, including Web Site breaches impacting retailers, banks and government agencies. Mark will discuss particularly dangerous types of threats that might effect individuals such as the Dark Web, the Internet of Things, phishing, and wifi attacks.

Mark Lanterman – Easiest Catch: Don't Be Another Fish In the Dark Net
Mark Lanterman of Corporate Forensic Services was the guest speaker at a joint meeting of the Eden Prairie A.M. and Eden Prairie Noon Rotary clubs.
Mark painted a frightening picture of the ease with which hackers are infiltrating computer systems of individuals and businesses, large and small, and stealing credit-card information. “This is all about the money” and not bragging rights, he said about the seemingly numerous security breaches taking place. He placed part of the blame on a Russian hacker called Rescator who has created a vicious malware that can penetrate Windows-based computers and has also created a market for distributing stolen credit-card information.
Demonstrating how stolen information can be obtained – down to ZIP Code level, with about 1,800 credit cards from 55344 appearing to be stolen – Mark urged us to use credit cards rather than debit cards. There’s a big difference between credit cards and debit cards if your information is hacked. If your credit card is hacked, the issuer (the bank) is the one that will be fighting to get its money back. If your debit card is hacked, YOU will be fighting to get your money back.
That said, new and even more frightening forms of fraud are being discovered, including a malware called Zeus that can penetrate systems formerly thought of as quite safe. Mark related this by reciting a recent case involving a $1 million, high-tech, attempted bank heist involving an Edina nonprofit organization. The key ingredient to this incident will sound familiar: an employee clicked on a fraudulent-but-inviting email that gave Zeus access to the nonprofit’s data.
Mark tends to give high marks to Apple, its computers, and its Apple Pay system for being safer when it comes to financial information. You can find out much more about Mark and his company at www.compforensics.com.
Announcements
The first meeting of the school year between STRIVE mentors and their students will be Friday, Sept. 16, at EPHS.
An information session for students who may be interested in being an outbound student in Rotary Youth Exchange will be held 7-8 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Career Resource Center at EPHS.
Additional Rotarians are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels every fifth week, since a fourth route is being added. Contact club member Caryl Hansen if you can help.
Please continue to sell tickets to the Oct. 8 Vino Classico event, and also provide a bottle of wine or cash substitute so we can hold the Wall of Wine raffle.
Happy Fines
Rotarians from both clubs were happy and willing to pay for sharing why. Here’s a sampling: Bev Aho was happy to report that the EP Community Foundation’s Prairie Brewfest is set for Saturday, Sept. 10. Caryl was happy to have a great encounter with a former Rotary Youth Exchange student. Former club president and visitor Bud Baker was happy, well just happy to be at the meeting. Ditto for Angela Wandera.
