Pastor Kubisa Sosthene Muzenende is the founder of Let Africa Live (LAV), a non-governmental organization providing job skills, training and psycho-social support to victims of war. LAV has given training to over 3,000 youth since its founding in 2000. Steve Solbrack is a St. Louis Park Rotarian who traveled this past summer to the Eastern Congo. Unable to come to our meeting was Dr. Edwige Mubonzi, a general practice medical doctor from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). After graduating from medical school, she worked at Panzi Hospital, treating female victims of rape in the ongoing civil conflict. 

Summary/Highlights: Peder Garnaas-Halvorson interpreted for Pastor Muzenende as he spoke French. Here is an excerpt: I am Congolese, Congo is the Heart of Africa. I am proud of that part of Africa. I was born in a poor family. Our country contains both Rich and Poor- a dilemma. A population in Poverty has very few resources. The Government does nothing to help the poor children and families. I was fortunate. My father was a pastor and became friends with a Norwegian missionary. The missionary provided a means for me to study. As I grew up I made a vow to help the poor children be educated. The Government recruits children ages 7 and up to be in the military. There are also 23 militia groups that also recruit the children. These children are traumatized, raped and abused. I have made it my vocation to advocate for the rights of children in the Congo. I created a center with help from friends. We help children younger than 10 go back to school. For kids from 14 to 18 we provide professional training programs. Once they are trained and receive tools they will become financially independent and help their family and friends  to have resources for schooling and living. Steve Solbrack also spoke about his experience this summer in the Congo as well as giving us background information on Dr. Mubonzi. Because Pastor Muzenende and Dr. Mubonzi are not able to return to the Congo because of the danger they are in for their advocacy group, Steve and his wife met with their families. Steve dedicated in prayer the land that will be used to open a clinic.
