Speakers: Scout Troop 479
Scouts will present their "state of the troop" and fill us in about our previous grants to the troop and how they would use their current grant request to buy tents. We've supported this troop for many years. It's always interesting to hear about what they're doing and how the Scouting program makes a difference for the boys and their families.

A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation
Speakers: Curt Anderson and Nancy Torrison

A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation is a leading contributor to the cure of lung cancer through its work with fostering disease awareness, early detection and lung cancer treatments.  The Foundation fights lung cancer by funding innovative research and raising awareness through education and patient support.

Curt Anderson and Nancy Torrison spoke about the lack of attention and funding lung cancer receives despite being the most deadly cancer in America.  In fact, it kills more Americans than the next three cancers combined.  Lung cancer has a survival rate of only 16%.   Curt and Nancy also talked about the false conception that only smokers get lung cancer.  This is not true. Over half of all those who get lung cancer have never smoked in their lives.  Nancy talked about the importance of having your home checked for high levels of radon because this is one of the leading causes of lung cancer.  She said that one in five homes in Minnesota have radon levels that require action to lower those levels.  Radon testing kits can be obtained at a low cost.  Curt, Nancy and A Breath of Hope have worked hard to raise awareness since the charity was founded in 2008.  Formed by a small group of lung cancer survivors, the organization has grown and will continue to raise awareness to fight the disease through marketing, awareness events, public speaking, billboards and community outreach.

Vocational: Carol Sundet Meeker
Carol was born and raised in Edina, Minnesota, the youngest of four children.  As her siblings were all considerably older, she said it was almost like being an only child at times.  Her brother, David Sundet, is a fellow member of the EP AM Rotary. She has been involved with the family manufacturing businesses since she was 15 years old, working full time in the summers at her family’s company.  Her husband has labeled her “the ultimate juggler” running their household and managing 9 properties, mostly industrial, and 1 retail and 1 medical, for many years.  She just sold the last of the family’s manufacturing businesses.  Carol met her husband through an advertisement in the Twin Cities Reader.  They talked for 2 hours before discovering he was also from Edina, and they grew up one block from one another.  They were engaged 3 months after that initial conversation and married 9 months later.  Carol has 2 children, a son and a daughter.  Her son got married in November, 2014, and her daughter is getting married this July.  Both children are marrying their high school prom dates!

Happy Fines

  • Dan O’Brien offered a touching tribute to his sister who recently passed away.
  • Carol Bomben was anxiously awaiting the arrival of her grandson (and his parents) from Texas.  They will all depart from Minnesota and drive to Winnipeg to observe the Women’s World Cup Soccer games.
  • Jenifer Loon’s oldest daughter just graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree in biology.  Her youngest daughter graduates from Eden Prairie High School on June 5th.
