October 4th Meeting Preview
Hennepin County Commissioner Candidates Forum

For the first time in more than 35 years, citizens of Hennepin County’s District 5 will elect a new county commissioner. With Irene Kelly as moderator, the two candidates will share how they are qualified for this position and what they would do if elected.

Debbie Goettel is a civil engineer who has worked in the environmental and sustainability fields and currently consults and owns a small business. The longtime Richfield resident was elected mayor in 2005 and is serving her third four-year term. Before being elected, she was an active volunteer in her community. She still serves on numerous state and regional boards that work on housing, labor, public health and transportation issues. (pictured on right)

Maureen Scallen Failor, as president of the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, understands the private sector and wants to bring a common-sense business approach to the county workforce and economic development. She has been a top executive in a family business and also has worked with community-based nonprofits. (pictured on left)

Ames Sheldon - Potholes in the Road to Publication

Have you ever thought about writing and publishing a book? Ames Sheldon, our guest speaker on Sept. 27, outlined the obstacles she faced in writing and publishing the award-winning novel titled “Eleanor’s Wars.” Ames has been writing fiction since age 9, but “Eleanor’s Wars” – inspired by an operetta written by her late uncle – is the product of 15 years of work. It’s set against the backdrop of World War II and focuses on the matriarch of a New Jersey family and the family secrets that soon unfold.
The obstacles she overcame during the period between idea and publication were many and substantial. She was told there wasn’t enough tension in the story. Her story was too long. She had difficulty finding an agent. She faced many rejections from publishing houses. And, she took on the huge tasks of self-publishing her book. When she finally held a copy of her book, in November of last year, “That was a big day,” she said. Last April, “Eleanor’s Wars” won a national book award, the Independent Book Publishers Association’s 2016 Benjamin Franklin Gold Medal Award for Best New Voice in Fiction. You can find out more about author Ames Sheldon and her work at www.amesheldon.com.

Announcements
  • We welcomed guests that included prospective member Jacob Stonesifer and Edina Noon Rotarian Roy Pavelka, as well as former member Chuck Martz and his wife Sue, who are visiting from Philadelphia because of the local Ryder Cup activities.
  • Oct. 15 is the deadline for student applications to two Rotary Youth Exchange programs, including a new, short-term program (a summer exchange) for 15- to 17-year- olds. Contact Jane McGinty for more information.
  • Roy Terwilliger shared memories of Dr. John Wright, the Eden Prairie veterinarian and this club’s charter president. Dr. Wright recently passed away. “John was a builder,” said Roy, meaning community builder. “This has been a club of builders.”
  • Caryl Hansen is looking for more Meals on Wheels drivers, since the local program has added a route. Deliveries are every fifth week.
  • Our next Swallowship gathering is Oct. 12.
  • We’re about 70 percent of the way toward our goal for Vino Classico ticket sales. The event is Oct. 8, so keep selling admission and raffle tickets, and please provide a bottle of wine for the Wall of Wine, if you haven’t already done so.

Happy Fines
Rotarians were happy and willing to pay for sharing why they were happy. Here’s a sampling:
  • Elaine Larabee was happy about the prize she won at the recent Powder Puff event held at EPHS that was touted the previous week by intern Bailey DeMets.
  • Jay Simpson appreciated professional speaker John Crudele’s recent kick-off of another year of STRIVE mentoring.
  • Dan O’Brien reminded us about the work of charter president Dr. John Wright, who recently passed away.
