Empower the new and younger members – District Governor Tim Murphy
 District Governor Tim Murphy is meeting with each and every Rotary Club in District #5950 and started his message to our club recognizing EPAM’s contributions. EPAM gave $29,906 to the Rotary Foundation last year, has a number of Paul Harris Fellows, three members of Paul Harris Society and has given almost $500,000 to RFI over the years. He recognized Dan O’Brien, John Crudele, Jeanne Zetah, and Irene Kelly for all the wonderful work they have done with District 5950.
Governor Murphy emphasized Rotary's strategic plan, its values and its strategic goals: support and strengthen clubs, focus and increase humanitarian service, and enhance public image and awareness.

He said Rotary’s first goal was to increase membership to support and make the clubs stronger. Rotary added 100,000 members over the last few years but also lost 100,000 during the same time period. Retention seems to be a challenge and Governor Murphy said we should take RI President KR Ravindran’s simple message: lead by example and surround yourself with smart people. He said in a survey taken of members under 35, there was a common response that they wanted to rub shoulders with people of significance, apart from fellowship, and service. To retain new and younger members, the way to do it is to empower them and get out of the way. He narrated his personal experience when he first joined Rotary. Some members of his club got him on various committees and he learnt about letting go from Mike Norman. He said there should be no micro-management. Instead, new members should be empowered and should be involved as much as possible in club committees and activities.
Second goal is to focus and increase services that Rotary has been involved with. He was happy that District 5950 was among top 10 in giving in the world. Rotary’s work with eradication of polio should indicate how significant its work is in that and other service renderings. Contributions from individual clubs to specific projects benefit up to three times from the foundation. We should keep this in mind when we give to the RFI and emphasize its significance while trying to increase and collaboration and connection with people and organizations.
Enhancing Rotary’s public image is the third goal. Use of social media is a good way to increase awareness. Clubs should improve networking and promote signature events and activities. Governor Murphy suggested we should come up with something catchy when asked about Rotary instead of just saying we are a service club. He had a ‘thank you’ for movers and shakers that made up the club, its members.

- Jane McGinty took Art to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts where Art saw Art and got his first glimpse of frost
- Jay Simpson had good news to share: Jim Loutzenhiser was doing better after surgery.
