LONNIE SOPPELAND FROM THE EDEN PRAIRIE POLICE DEPARTMENT - EDEN PRAIRIE CHAPLAIN PROGRAM
Sergeant Soppeland indicated that the program has been around for 25 years and is an all volunteer program. They meet once a month. The program is sponsored by the Eden Prairie Crime Prevention Fund. The group is always on call to support the community. Sergeant Soppeland then introduced Pastor Jack Perrin one of the volunteer chaplains who shared some history of Chaplain programs, the training involved in becoming a chaplain and the duties, including:
 
  • Chaplains notify families of the death of a family member. Usually done by a group including uniformed officers and a Chaplain.
  • Chaplains support families and displaced residents.
  • Chaplains support first responders and their families.
  • Chaplains assist in diffusing potentially volatile situations.
  • Chaplains help with funerals and connect families with clergy.
 
Pastor Perrin then introduced Sharon Predovich, another of the Eden Prairie Chaplains who said she found out how to become a chaplain from Father Tim Power. She shared how being a chaplain has impacted her life and how chaplains have supported the community. She thanked Rotary and indicated that she was a recipient of a Rotary Scholarship.

SPOTLIGHT ON ROY TERWILLIGER
Roy is the youngest of four children from a small town in South Dakota. Roy is a graduate of Madison, SD H.S. and the University of South Dakota and has a Master’s Degree from University of Iowa. Roy met his wife while serving in the military. Before getting involved in Banking, Roy held a position as City Manager, represented the Bankers Association in New York and Washington D.C., and started Suburban National Bank which was sold to U.S. Bank. Roy spent eleven years in the MN Senate, was appointed as Chair of Sports Facilities Commission, serving for eight years, and returned to banking before retiring. Roy and his late wife Mary Lou had three children and nine grandchildren. Roy is the last remaining Charter member of the club and is very proud of the legacy including the genesis of several entities formed by and out of Rotary especially the Eden Prairie Community Foundation which has raised and contributed $2,000,000 to charitable causes.
