Keith Stout - Be the Match: Saving Lives through Cellular Therapy
The ins and outs of cellular therapy – specifically marrow or cord blood transplants – was outlined Sept. 11 by guest speaker Keith Stout, the senior director of major and planned gifts for Be the Match.
Someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer every three minutes, and only 30 percent of the time can a bone- marrow match be found in that person’s family. So Be the Match saves lives by providing patients and their families with access to the world’s largest bone marrow registry.
One of its challenges is a disparity, by race, in the likelihood of finding a match in the registry. If you are white, the likelihood of finding a match is 77 percent. But if you are black, that likelihood is just 23 percent – even though the registry has about 19 million members. This is why Be the Match is working hard to expand the registry in other parts of the world; for example, a $10 million campaign to expand the registry in Mexico is currently underway.
Be the Match recruits those ages 18 to 44 to be part of the registry, and if you are on the registry you are moved off at age 61. In addition to building and providing access to the registry, Be the Match also provides financial support to families and patients, and funds research.
Bringing the need for cancer-fighting cellular therapy close to home were club members Robb Hiller and Brad Aho, who shared their respective stories. If you would like more information, visit the Be the Match website at bethematch.org.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
There is no meeting at Bearpath on Sept. 18, as we are part of a multi-club event at the Edina Country Club that features guest speaker Manny Villafana on the topic “Living Legend of Medicine.” We’re back at Bearpath on Sept. 25 with a presentation by Tom Kieffer, CEO of Virteva. It’s all hands on deck for the Oct. 6 Vino Classico fundraiser. You can help by selling tickets and providing wine and silent-auction items. Also, sign up for one of the volunteer-worker spots.
