MICHAEL BEACH, CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS COACH AND A CONTRIBUTING MEMBER OF THE PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS COACHES ALLIANCE: "TRAINING MILLENNIALS TO LEADERSHIP"
Michael spoke about Millennials in the workplace and what works to attract and retain this generation of employees. Acknowledging the risk of over generalizing, he noted that Millennials have the strongest tech skills of any generation. They understand games and websites. But there is a cost that came with these tech skills and people skills is an area where this generation needs work. Furthermore this generation grew up in the last recession and saw their parents struggle with employment. This is a generation that does not blindly accept what is being told to them by government and company leaders.

Working successfully with Millennials requires leaders to raise the level of their game. Millennials need more training opportunities, especially around people skills or soft skills. They expect career development opportunities, or they will leave. They’ll seek opportunities to prove themselves so it is important to provide it. They figure stuff out but it helps to spend time with them. Gently show them ways to do a job—but don’t tell them or be harsh in your criticism. Let Millennials have a lot of say in how the work is to be done and let them know what their impact is on the cause or mission of the company as this can be a motivator. Regarding training, it should be high impact and provided in small doses rather than hours in a lecture.

    Summary Points:
    • Let them have their way when it makes sense
    • Create the right rewards, and be creative as you do
    • Put their imaginations to work for you
    • Build the relationship—first them then you
    • Be positive when correcting. Take a gentle “let me show you how I might to this” approach
    • Don’t take things personally. It’s not about you
    • Help Millennials to see the big picture along with details
    • Make it matter to them. Share the “why” before the “what”
    • Be a mentor
Great leaders listen and learn with an open mind.

Gene attended St. Cloud Tech, St. Cloud State University, and competed a master’s program in Pennsylvania. 1969 was the year he married Beverly and began his career in finance and insurance. His early career was in St. Cloud and he moved to the metro in 1992. Today his focus is estate and retirement planning. Gene has three kids and has lived in Bear Path since 1995.
