SHERIFF RICH STANEK - WHAT'S NEW AT THE HENNEPIN COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek and Deputy Kell McDaniel provided our March 27 program: an overview of what the Sheriff’s Office is and does.

The department has been a model of stability, with just 27 sheriffs since 1852. It had a 70-year period under just three sheriffs. This is an elected position covering a lot of ground, since Hennepin County has 1.3 million residents and more than 556 square miles of territory. The department has eight lines of business: jail, court security, patrol, warrants, civil process, investigations, 911 dispatch, and crime lab.

One of their current initiatives is #NOverdose, which is a campaign to raise awareness of the opioid crisis. A record number of people died from opioid-related overdoses in Hennepin County during 2017: the number is 162, which is a 47 percent increase from two years earlier. The Sheriff’s Office has participated in nearly 130 public events and speaking engagements to spread the word about this growing epidemic.

ROTARY CARES
Bill Yeager talked to us about Rotary Cares, a club program that reaches out to members whenever there’s been a significant event that calls for a card, flowers, visit, or other outreach. This could be a birth, death, accident, illness, surgery, or honor. “We’d like to know about that,” he said. Contact Bill or President Roger Jorgensen for more information.

HAPPY BUCKS
We are happy and willing to kick in $5 to explain why. Dave Sundet announced he and his wife are moving to Plymouth and therefore he’s leaving the club. Aaron Glass advocated “Ask for what you want” and was pleased that a daughter did just that, landing an unexpected marketing job in Los Angeles for an international cosmetics company. Dick Ward reported that Vicki Brown, spouse of former club member John Brown, is making “incredible progress” following an illness. Lyndon Moquist is happy to report that the Edina Realty Eden Prairie office is holding a major event April 21 that will allow people to dispose of used household items; the event will be at the firm’s EP offices. Brad Aho is a Lions Club member and has tickets to the April 14 Pancake Breakfast; Suzanne Kutina is proud of daughter Beth and all the other young people who participated in the weekend March For Our Lives event.
