RICK GETSCHOW (EDEN PRAIRIE CITY MANAGER) AND KARLA SHALLALE: SUSTAINABLE EDEN PRAIRIE
Rick introduced Carol Lundgren, Sustainability Specialist and Carly Shelldal who presented the City of Eden Prairie’s Sustainable Eden Prairie initiative. Sustainable EP is an initiative to build upon the success of 20-40-15 which set out to increase energy efficiency of buildings by 20% and Vehicles by 40% by 2015.
Sustainable EP is designed to promote sustainable practices in four areas – energy, landscape, waste and water. The plan was adopted in the fall of 2017 and the goal is to reduce energy-related greenhouse gases by 30% by 2025 and 80% by 2050. A 2016 study quantified annual energy costs at $51.7M for business and $24.9M for residents.
The city provides links to resources which help residents and businesses with tools and resources including low- cost energy assessments. Rebates are available for upgrades to lighting, heating and cooling and refrigeration. An open house/informational event is being scheduled in October 2018 at the EP Community Center where residents and businesses can connect with contractors.
