PHIL LOSACKER AND IXCHEL MCKINNIE - MEMORIAL BLOOD CENTERS: WHAT IS BLOOD AND WHY IT MATTERS
Phil shared a couple of dramatic stories of lives saved by donated blood supplied by Memorial Blood Centers.

In addition to whole blood, there are three components of blood including red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Red blood cells carry oxygen. Platelets are used to control bleeding and used by chemotherapy patients. Platelets last only five days. Plasma promotes clotting and are used by burn victims.

Donors can give blood every fifty-six days and whole blood can be stored for forty-two days. Memorial Blood Centers collect 2,000 units of blood per week.

The Blood Bank and Lab are located at the intersection of University Avenue and Highway 280 in St. Paul. The lab performs 8,000,000 tests per year. Memorial generates revenue through sales of blood and lab tests for Hospitals. Deliveries to hospitals are made twice daily. Demand is constant which is why they are out publicizing the Center and promoting blood donation. They are in their seventieth year of service. Roy Terwilliger shared that EPAM Rotary participated in blood drives for several years early in our existence.
