ALEX MODEAS: ALAFIA FOUNDATION

Alex Modeas was an EPAM intern (2015-2016) and is a Junior at St John’s University who is currently interning with Alafia Foundation (AF). Alex credits his Rotary experience in helping his growth. He received a fellowship award which made it possible to volunteer for his unpaid internship with AF.

AF is a non-profit organization whose mission is to “champion purpose-filled leaders transforming life in north Minneapolis.” The inspiration for the organization is Richard Leider’s best-selling book The Power of Purpose. The founder and executive director had a long career in marketing with Target and in January 2008 he put his skills to work in serving the north side of Minneapolis through Alafia Place which became AF in 2012.

Alafia is a spiritual greeting from the African Yoruba tradition, that conveys peace, tranquility, good tidings and well-being.

AF provides two year fellowships that provide coaching, scholarships and expanded networks of support for Northside leaders as they develop themselves and their organizations for maximum impact. Profiles of their three current fellows can be seen at https://www.alafia.org/fellows. They hope to have five in next cycle. AF is looking to partner with other groups in obtaining sponsors
