Notes from July 7, 2020
District 5950 Gov. Thomas Gump on “Rotary Opens Opportunities”
Our July 7 guest via Zoom was the new governor of District 5950 Rotary, Tom Gump, a member of the morning Rotary club in Edina. Tom, who is connected with many of the members of Eden Prairie A.M. Rotary, spoke to Rotary International’s theme for 2020-21, “Rotary Opens Opportunities.”

Tom noted that, while Eden Prairie A.M. Rotary hit membership marks the past year, North American membership in Rotary continues to slide and will be addressed in the coming year, with emphasis on creating new clubs, especially clubs associated with a cause, such as the recently announced club that will focus on fighting sex trafficking.

Rotary International also wants every club to have an updated strategic plan; select new members carefully so as to boost member retention; continue the worldwide “End Polio Now” effort; and consider the new Rotary focus on the environment.

to learn during today’s meeting that his sidekick and grandson Jackson seems to know the Pledge of Allegiance.
At the district level, there’s a new partnership with YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities called “Racial Equity: Creating a Better Story.” This will be a series of discussions via Zoom that focus on racism, racial equity, and unconscious bias with recent local events as a thread.

Thank you, Tom, for your leadership and guidance on the district level this coming Rotary year.

Announcements
  • Our guest speaker on July 14 will be Sandhya Gupta and on July 21 we’ll have a club assembly focusing on plans for the coming Rotary year.
  • This meeting starts a new year led by President Prafulla Vegunta as well as a few new board members and program chairs. That includes Nate Nyren taking over for Lyndon Moquist in coordinating guest speakers.
Spotlight on David Anderson
We learned in his vocational that David Anderson and his wife Jeanie are Edina transplants who moved here and built a house in 1974. They raised two children, Lisa and David, and now have grandchildren. David is a 41-year member of Eden Prairie A.M. Rotary. Among active members, only Roy Terwilliger – a charter member of A.M. Rotary – has been a club member longer. Most of that time, David has had perfect meeting attendance and served in virtually every leadership role, including head of the annual Golden Eagle Awards for 30 years. He’s also been active in the community, including three years on the Eden Prairie Parks, Recreation & Natural Resources Commission and 16 years on the Eden Prairie School Board during which the school district built four schools: Cedar Ridge, Eden Lake, Oak Point, and Eden Prairie High. He operates Fox Run Management, a tax consulting company that has a subsidiary focused on property management. He also owns Twin Cities Hockey Dynamics, which provides youth hockey programs. In his spare time, David spends time on the golf course. He and Jeanie spend 4-5 months each winter in Naples, Fla. Thanks, David, for your long-time contributions to Rotary and Eden Prairie.

Happy Fives
Holly Link is happy her kids have completed a move from Anchorage to Seattle. Roger Jorgensen is happy to have spent some vacation time in Sioux Falls. Aaron Casper is happy that Lyndon Moquist is safe, unhurt, and free to golf following a recent auto accident. Bob Starr is happy to have a new grand-daughter, born to his daughter Alexandra. Dan O’Brien is happy
